Over the course of many lineup changes and a relocation to Los Angeles in 1974, "Big Mac" evolved into one of the most successful pop/rock units in commercial music history. During the early years, Fleetwood Mac endured a succession of unstable (but brilliant) lead-guitarist/singer/songwriters in Peter Green, Danny Kirwan, and Jeremy Spencer. Green and Spencer eventually jumped ship for cultish religious pursuits, and Kirwan (who ended up in a psychiatric hospital) was fired in 1972 for refusing to go on stage at a Munich gig. Green, in particular, wrote some classics in "Oh Well," "Black Magic Woman" (later a hit for Santana), and "The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Pronged Crown)." Danny Kirwan contributed many of the standout tracks on albums like BARE TREES, including the haunting "Dust," the ethereal "Sunny Side of Heaven," and the propulsive title track. Bob Welch, a Los Angeles resident, was brought on board in 1971. During his time with Fleetwood Mac, Welch penned some standouts as well, like "Hypnotized" and "Sentimental Lady." During all these changes, drummer Mick Fleetwood, bassist John McVie, and vocalist and keyboardist Christine McVie (also a fine songwriter) provided the glue for the proceedings. In January of 1975 Welch left, and engineer and producer Keith Olsen turned the band on to a tape of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks (who had previously released a much-sought-after debut on Polydor called BUCKINGHAM NICKS). They were hired onto Fleetwood Mac, and the rest is history. FLEETWOOD MAC, the first album featuring the new lineup, became a goldmine, eventually hitting #1 in November 1976, fifteen months after its release. After much inner turmoil, Fleetwood Mac put out RUMOURS, which topped charts around the world and became one of the biggest albums in history. Mac never duplicated the impact of RUMOURS, but subsequent albums (TUSK, FLEETWOOD MAC LIVE, MIRAGE, TANGO IN THE NIGHT) have been substantial successes. Buckingham (who left in 1987) and Nicks have enjoyed solid solo careers, and Christine McVie had a #10 hit in 1984 with "Got a Hold on Me" from her self-titled solo album. Fleetwood Mac reunited with two new guitarists in 1989, releasing the lackluster BEHIND THE MASK. In November 1993, confirming the departure of Stevie Nicks and guitarist Billy Burnette, Fleetwood Mac announced the addition of vocalist Bekka Bramlett and veteran singer, songwriter, and guitarist Dave Mason to the band's lineup, joining Fleetwood and the McVies. ~ Rick Clark ----------- Related Artists ----------- Mayall, John & Bluesbreakers Welch, Bob Buckingham, Lindsey Fleetwood's Zoo, Mick Green, Peter Nicks, Stevie Buckingham/Nicks Fritz ---------- Roots & Influences --------- Beatles James, Elmore Dixon, Willie Spann, Otis King, B.B.
